Gare sprint al sabato, ripensarle… o abolirle: il punto di Verstappen (e di Austin)

Verstappen regola brutalmente Leclerc al via, dopodiché si sviluppa una delle gare sprint più scontate di sempre. Così, Austin rimette sul tavolo la riflessione sulla riorganizzazione del formato del weekend dei Gran Premi e sul senso delle garette del sabato. Che i tifosi nei sondaggi ufficiali hanno già bocciato. Dice Verstappen:
I feel like we only need one qualifying in the weekend, where you put everyone on the line and it feels great.
As a fan, I would just be disappointed because then you more or less know that if nothing crazy happens, you know what’s going to happen tomorrow. It takes away that magic, when you had qualifying, but you’re not sure which car is going to be quickest in the race.
L’esperimento della gara corta parte – non senza controversie – nel 2021 come una soluzione per distribuire lo spettacolo nell’arco di tutto il weekend. Ma da Austin i promotori dicono che almeno per loro non ha funzionato. Bobby Epstein:
It didn’t help. It’s a surprise. You have to decide at what point are people coming for the event, which I think our fans are coming for the event, as much as they are for the sport. So, I think it still remains to be seen whether the sprint race is something the fans are embracing, or it’s more controversial.
Che Verstappen abbia ammazzato il campionato può essere un fattore. Ad ogni modo, l’organizzazione lascia intendere che nel 2024 non è detto che Austin si riproponga per una sprint. Di qui la necessità di trovare comunque un nuovo compromesso, a livello centrale, dopo i diversi aggiustamenti che Liberty ha già portato nel tempo. Horner ammette:
We’re in a process where we need to be open to change and evolution. I think that the concept is fine, but as regarding the execution we can do a better job in making it more exciting for the viewer.
Perché ad oggi, la sprint di Interlagos del 2022 resta la più vivace, per una concomitanza di fattori singolari e non frequenti. Le altre non le ricorda nessuno.
