Hamilton alla Mercedes fino a 40 anni, bocciata l’offerta della Ferrari. E resta anche Russell

Dice che non se l’aspettava di correre fino a 40 anni, quelli che avrà nel 2025 quando scadrà il nuovo contratto, fresco di firma, alla vigilia della gara di Monza che a prescindere da come andrà è già una pietra miliare nella carriera di Lewis Hamilton, 11 anni dopo l’annuncio del passaggio dalla McLaren alla Mercedes:
I think a lot of people stay in the same jobs and roles for a long period of time and fall out of love with it but just keep going because it’s maybe the only thing they can do. But for me I genuinely love, still have that love for what I’m doing.
I love that feeling of when you have the lows together and when you have the highs together. There’s nothing like it.
Obiettivo, ovviamente quel titolo che nel 2021 è sfuggito contro Verstappen a poche curve dalla fine del campionato, in un finale controverso e avvelenato che all’epoca aveva messo seriamente in discussione la sua voglia di correre oltre che la credibilità della Formula 1. Però:
On the 2021 thing, I’m not really a revenge person. It’s not about revenge. It’s not about redemption. That’s in the past, there’s nothing you can do about the past. But what we can do is work harder and be more precise and be better moving forwards. And I truly believe that with this team, we can win more world championships and more races together. So that’s where all my energy is going.
Con lui, fino al 2025 resta in squadra anche George Russell. Nato e cresciuto sotto la stella a tre punte:
I have grown up with this team ever since joining as part of the junior programme back in 2017. It’s my home. It’s been great to work with everybody at Brackley and Brixworth to make progress with our car and push forward our development. Their loyalty, vision and hard work is inspiring.
Wolff sostiene che Hamilton e Russell insieme siano “la coppia migliore sullo schieramento”, assicura che il rinnovo di Hamilton non sia mai stato in discussione: “Solo una formalità”. Secondo la stampa inglese, c’era un’offerta di 40 milioni di sterline per portarlo alla Ferrari. E si sarebbe mosso personalmente John Elkann.
