Perché l’Alpine si è fatta scappare Alonso (e perché l’Aston Martin non ci ha pensato due volte)

Szafnauer domenica pomeriggio a Budapest era ancora convinto che Alonso firmasse il rinnovo e che la trattativa fosse solo una formalità: “Questione di tempo e dettagli”. Il diretto interessato invece metteva in giro un po’ di frasi sibilline. Da un’intervista a Racefans:
I would like to stay here. But there are two parties and I will not put a gun in the head of anyone. When two parties want to agree on something, it takes 10 minutes. When two parties fight to agree on something, maybe one of the sides is not happy.
Non passano nemmeno 24 ore che l’Aston Martin annuncia la firma pluriennale con Matador, sebbene all’inizio fosse determinata a rinnovare con Vettel. Che da parte sua portava il negoziato per le lunghe, motivo per cui la dirigenza alla fine gli ha chiesto una posizione ufficiale entro la pausa estiva.
Seb s’è pronunciato giovedì mattina, alla vigilia del weekend di Budapest, aprendo ufficialmente la porta ad Alonso che dietro le quinte già aveva un piede in squadra, contrariamente a quanto credeva – o fingeva di credere – Szafnauer. Lo dice Stroll fra le righe:
It seemed natural to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together.
Con Stroll – inteso come Lawrence – il primo colloquio risale al 2020, quando il team è ancora Racing Point. Con Stroll – inteso come Lance – c’è un sodalizio trasversale dai tempi dell’Academy della Ferrari. Quindi è un po’ un cerchio che si chiude.
Per il resto, con ogni probabilità l’Aston Martin paga più dell’Alpine. Tant’è che Szafnauer in Ungheria toccava l’aspetto economico e lasciava intendere che l’ultimo nodo fosse proprio quello:
Every driver I’ve ever negotiated with, it’s been a question of money and other things too. For whatever reason, they want the most money and we want to pay the least.
